COVID Associate

The Association of Public Health Laboratories has offered to sponsor a COVID Associate at Hawaii's State Laboratories Division in Pearl City.

The proposed duties will be in the following areas:


Pre-analytical

Assist congregate living facilities which have CLIA certificates of waiver to set up testing systems and maintain equipment and supplies.

General: provide training, consultation, and troubleshooting for congregate living facilities (for example, nursing homes, long term care facilities, and correctional institutions with certificate of waiver) for performing antigen detection and point of care molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2.

Pre-analytical duties:  Train staff how to perform testing.  Utilize training materials from manufacturer and personal experience.  Customize training to skill level and experience of staff.  Instruct staff on how to build and maintain a supply chain.  Teach concepts of false positive and false negative. Explain requirements for certificate of waiver.

Analytical duties: demonstrate testing procedures and teach about possible sources of error.

Post-analytical duties: teach recognition of unusual results or patterns of results requiring confirmation.  Teach reporting of results as appropriate to State epidemiologist.  Assure that testing staff understand proper actions based on test results, presence or absence of other cases, and symptoms.

Quality control duties: provide consultation via telephone and e-mail.  Teach criteria for acceptance or rejection of test results based on quality indicators.


Analytical

Teach staff at testing site with certificate of waiver. Teach optimum testing protocol for available test system or systems.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control.  Note that this will be a major area of focus.  QA/QC would involve point of care CLIA waiver labs and also the State Laboratory main campus in Pearl City.

Teach recognition of quality control failures and of unusual patterns of results which suggest problems. Teach appropriate steps to take when accuracy of results is questioned.

General: provide training, consultation, and troubleshooting for congregate living facilities (for example, nursing homes, long term care facilities, and correctional institutions with certificate of waiver) for performing antigen detection and point of care molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2.  Promote documentation of quality systems including assessment of risks, problem solving, and continuous quality improvement.

Pre-analytical duties:  Train staff how to perform testing.  Utilize training materials from manufacturer and personal experience.  Customize training to skill level and experience of staff.  Instruct staff on how to build and maintain a supply chain.  Teach concepts of false positive and false negative. Explain requirements for certificate of waiver.

Funding for the Associate position would begin in July and continue for at least one and likely two years.  Associates must have a baccalaureate or higher degree.  Salary range is dependent on experience.
